Check Ups
We are keen advocates of regular check ups as a preventative measure to identify potential issues before they become bigger problems. They are important because your dentist can identify problems early, before you even notice them. This allows us to treat issues early, when they are easier and less expensive to deal with.
At your check up we will discuss any concerns or current problems you’re having before we examine your teeth thoroughly. We will examine your mouth for:
We may take x rays to screen for deeper issues like decay hiding under your fillings or under the gum line, fractured teeth, and problems with wisdom teeth.
If you need dental work, your dentist will explain the treatment plan and answer any questions you may have. If no work is necessary, your dentist can advise you generally on dental hygiene and issues such as bad breath, gum problems, sensitivity or grinding.

Cleaning
Modern scale and polish techniques are pain free, and an effective preventative treatment in dental care. Your hygienist will gently clean your teeth, removing staining and any plaque build up, checking for signs of gum infection or bleeding. Cleaning in the clinic is more effective than using your toothbrush at home and also allows us to spot potential problems early.
Scale and polish involves cleaning both the visible part of your teeth above the gums but also just under the gums where your toothbrush cannot reach. It also removes stains. It is highly effective at maintaining dental health as it removes the plaque which allows bacteria to thrive, cause cavities and irritate gums.
If you suffer from receding gums, you may find cleaning to be a little sensitive. In rare cases people may find the sensitivity is unpleasant and we can offer pain relief for these situations.
Your hygienist can also offer you advice on brushing technique, use of dental floss or interdental brushes and special hygiene for specific dental work such as bridges, dentures, orthodontic treatments and implants.

Fillings
If you are experiencing tooth sensitivity or pain due to decay, fillings are an effective way to eliminate pain, and restore the function and appearance of teeth. They can also help to restore the appearance of damaged or broken teeth. Our modern and gentle dental care techniques allow us to restore your teeth with minimal discomfort.
White, or composite, fillings are becoming increasingly popular. We can match the colour to your teeth, so that they blend in much better than silver amalgam fillings and you can keep your white smile. They also adhere to the teeth, so they can be used to repair damaged teeth. Unfortunately they are not as strong and silver fillings, so large fillings in the back teeth may still require a silver filling. Your dentist will be able to advise you on which type of filling is appropriate for you.
After the dentist inspects your tooth, you will be given an injection to numb your mouth and avoid any pain. Modern methods are much more advanced, meaning we can often administer the pain relief without you even feeling the injection. The dentist will remove the decayed part of your tooth and prepare it to receive the filling. The filling is bonded to your tooth and hardened with a blue UV light. It will then be polished to protect from staining.
The whole procedure takes 20-40 minutes depending on the size and position of the cavity. Your dentist is well aware that you find dental work unpleasant and will check in with you regularly to ensure that you are ok. You can raise your hand at any time if you’re not comfortable and we’ll do our best to make the process easier for you.
Take care after your appointment as your mouth will still be numb for a short while, so it’s best to avoid eating or hot/cold drinks until you regain normal sensation, to avoid biting yourself, burning your tongue, spilling drinks and sensitivity. It may take a couple of days for your new filling to settle and for sensitivity to die down. Any longer than this and you should let your dentist know.

Crowns
More complex restoration jobs may require crowns, which are necessary when there is not enough tooth material left to support a filling. The crown fits over the remaining tooth, in order to protect and stabilise it, for long lasting results that look and feel like your own teeth.
Crowns are caps shaped like a tooth. They can be made from porcelain, metal or a combination. All porcelain, or all ceramic crowns result in the most realistic look to match your own teeth. However, depending on the position of the crown, some crowns may need to be stronger and should be made of metal or a combination of metal and porcelain. These are usually used towards the back of your mouth where they are less visible and the difference with your own teeth is less noticeable. Metals used are gold, nickel, chromium or palladium alloys.
They are ideal for:
Crowns will be fitted over two appointments. In the first appointment, the dentist will examine the tooth, administer a local anaesthetic and reshape the tooth in preparation for the crown. Some teeth may require a root canal to prevent the root from decay. Several impressions of your teeth will be taken in order to ensure that your new crown fits your smile perfectly. A temporary crown will be fitted to last a few weeks until your next appointment. At the second appointment the dentist will remove the temporary crown and cement the permanent crown in place. The crown will then be shaped in order to ensure a good bite and polished to prevent staining.
Crowns function and look like a normal tooth. They are very sturdy and can last from 5 to 15 years when looked after properly. They do not require any special care, just good oral hygiene. Over time they may come loose and need to be replaced or cemented in again, but this is a quick and pain free procedure.

Extractions
If a tooth becomes damaged or decayed to the point that it is exceedingly painful and cannot be restored, we can extract the tooth swiftly in an effective, pain-free manner.
During a normal extraction, a local anaesthetic will be administered. The tooth will be loosened and then removed. Most extractions are surprisingly quick and pain free. Where the tooth has broken at the gum line or for teeth that are underneath the gum, a surgical extraction will be required. This entails making a small incision in the gum in order to access the tooth. This type of extraction may be more painful and take longer to recover from and may require antibiotics and over the counter painkillers.

Dentures
If the wearing of false teeth is your only option, we can create dentures that not only fit your mouth perfectly but carry the seamless appearance of genuine teeth. Our service emphasises the importance of ensuring a good, comfortable fit as this is essential for success with dentures.
Bridges
Dental bridges are used to fill gaps where teeth have been removed. Bridges are recommended for cosmetic reasons but also for functional reasons to prevent other teeth from moving and causing further problems.
Bridges can be used to replace one or more teeth and are fixed to the adjacent teeth or to an implant. Bridges are permanently fixed to your teeth so there’s no need to remove them for cleaning like a partial denture. Porcelain bridges can be matched to the colour of your teeth for an aesthetically pleasing look.
There are a number of different types of bridges, and the type of bridge we recommend will depend on where the bridge is required, whether there are teeth either side of the gap and what condition those teeth are in.
The exact procedure will vary according to the type of bridge you need. Generally, a local anaesthetic will be administered in order to prepare the teeth adjacent to the bridge. Your dentist will take impressions which will be sent away to get the bridge constructed. The dentist will put a temporary bridge in place until the permanent bridge is ready.
At your next visit, the temporary bridge will be removed and the permanent bridge will be put in place and adjusted to ensure a good fit. Your dentist will advise you on how to care for your new bridge.

Veneers
Veneers are a thin covering that fits over the front of your teeth to improve the cosmetic appearance of your teeth. Veneers are suitable for naturally dark teeth, teeth that are discoloured due to trauma, stained, and chipped teeth. Veneers can also be used to close gaps or change the appearance of crooked teeth without the need for lengthy orthodontic treatment.
It’s important to note that your teeth will need to be prepared for the veneers, by removing a minimal amount of the surface of the tooth, so getting veneers is not reversible. However, veneers still offer the least invasive method of changing the aesthetics of your teeth, and can result in substantial improvement in the appearance of your smile.
There are two types of veneers; composite or porcelain. Composite veneers are cheaper and quicker to put in place, generally only requiring one appointment. However, they don’t last as long and do have a tendency to stain. Porcelain veneers are more expensive but they result in a more natural appearance and generally last longer (5-10 years).
Depending on the extent of the work you need done, your dentist may take photographs, check your bite and the shade of your teeth. Then, using a local anaesthetic the teeth will be prepared. Composite veneers can be put in place the same day, whilst for porcelain veneers, the dentist will take impressions to send away to get your veneers made. In this case, the dentist will put temporary veneers in place and your porcelain veneers will be fitted at a second appointment. Once the veneers are in place they will be adjusted and polished.
Veneers are permanent fixtures in your mouth. They do not require any special care, just normal good oral hygiene.
